Cartoon Craze

There have been a lot of Blogs about Crazy Cartoons, and I just felt like I had to add in my 2 cents :) We are very, and I mean VERY picky about what our Kiddos are aloud to watch. As they have gotten older, we have relaxed about it somewhat but are still quite picky. And usually I will go on my gut feelings. If we have rented a movie and somewhere into it I start to feel that it is going somewhere inappropriate, my Kiddos love that word, then I have no qualms about turning it off. Now I won't say that this doesn't upset them but they have gotten to where they are usually in agreement with me.

When B was in kindergarten she came home upset one day because for snack one of the Kids brought in little individual pkged baby carrots with Sponge Bob pictures on the pkging. Now in our house Sponge bob is considered somewhat of an R rated thing. When we lived in Student Family Housing we received free Cable TV, the Kiddos who were 6, 5, 3, and 1 then would be watching say- Dora the Explora and when that ended Sponge bob, or any other unapproved nasty cartoon would pop on, you would hear shouts of MOM!!!!! Sponge bob is on!!!!!!- They would be in total panic to change the channel or turn off the TV, it was pretty cute. And even now, we get public TV and they watch PBS Kids, if a show comes on that they don't know about they will turn it off and come ask if I think it's ok.

I do realize that as they get older I will probably have some problems with this, but I hope that they will have learned by then to have some discretion about what they choose to watch. There is already so much bad out there that I can't protect them from, I feel that in Our home things should be as free from all that as I can possibly make it.

My Kiddos have never watched Cartoon Network, there is nothing on there that I feel they need to have in their heads. I remember renting a Tweety Bird video for them when they were small, I thought ya know Tweety Bird, cute little bird. should be fine right??? OK- right away the Bird is beating the you know what out of the Cat!! What the heck! So that one backfired on me and I learned my lesson.

My In-Laws, Siblings and yes even my own MOTHER think that I am silly to not let them watch things such as Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, Tom and Jerry, just to name a few. And I have so many friends who insist that Sponge bob is a little kids cartoon, age 2?????, I will stick to my own judgment, Thank You.

I have learned to just smile and shake my head when it comes up. You never realize before you have Children what a HUGE responsibility it is! You get to be responsible for everything that goes into them, not only their body but their minds. Being a parent is definitely not easy.

Favorite Kid movies for us- Veggie Tales, we love 'em :)

I definitely think that cartoons tend to be quite violent. But I haven't really watched any of the new cartoons.

I'd say I allow a bit more on my TV - for instance SpongeBob is one of our favorites - but certainly there are quite a bit of garbage shows out there. I stopped at a show on Cartoon Network once and this guy was talking about pitching a tent. I was so irritated, instantly irritated, and have all but ruled that channel out as an option (I think they have Tom & Jerry on there but that's about all we'll watch). Also, the non-stop marketing bugs the you-know-what out of me. Ads upon ads for toys and dolls and everything. Don't even get me started on the Bratz dolls...

Yeah the toy adds totally drive me crazy!

Lisaloo...good for you. If only more parents exercised good judgement. My nephew was allowed to watch R movies, play violent video games and happened to be the one to teach my daughter a few choice words. Another nephew was raised "openly" and ended up part of the skateboarding/drug culture. I am all for limits. The kids then learn discernment as they grow to become responsible adults.

We definitely screen before we let the kiddos watch...although we allow most Nick cartoons (including Spongebob for the Squirrel)...Cartoon Network is HORRIBLE!! That Ed, Ed, and Eddy show that is on there is one of the most disgusting, vulgar shows that I have ever seen! I like to mostly stick to Noggin...it's safe for BOTH of my kids to watch (although the Squirrel is getting a little bored with Yo Gabba Gabba...lol...poor thing!) Good for you for being so discerning! It IS tough nowadays to monitor what our kids watch. My rule is...if it makes me cringe, doubltake, or draw ANY conclusions, then it's OFF LIMITS!!!

It's crazy some of the things they pass off as Cartoons! Crazy, Crazy :)

I am right there with you on Spongebob and the whole lot. However my five year old does get bored with all noggin. One older kids show that I like and he likes is Phineas and Ferb on Disney. It's funny, cute and pretty g rated. I actually love to watch it with him.

Hello! I'm lissaloo's hubby, (as she calls me)! I just started my own blog, thought I'd just comment quickly here about Phineas and Ferb. We love that one too and catch it online whenever we can. Our 9, almost ten year old son totally loves it. Disney did a pretty good job with that one. As long as it doesn't turn into the 8 and 9 year olds with teen dating melodrama like most disney shows (insert zack&cody/ hanna montana) it will remain a favorite. I have to say that my honey is better at sticking to the guns than I am sometimes. But we are both very careful. I think that in today's world you really have to be. I know that there are a lot of things that I watched that I shouldn't have been allowed to when I was a kid. I wish that my parents had been as diligent as my wife! She's Awesome!!

Yeah we really like Phineas and Ferb, they are pretty fun. There really is a lot of good stuff that they can watch, you just have to know whats out there. And hey- there is always a good book around here to read too! :)

We love Veggie Tales here, but I've given up on the Sponge Bob, they are 9 & 5, my Mother was letting them watch at her house...
Now the Boy is so into Star Wars, we have started watching the Clone Wars. I hate all the commercials & the Princess is into the "Princess" things now. I'm gonna hurl if she gets pie eyed & says "they love each other" one more time... Sometimes it's good to not live 1 mile away from Grandparents!
